SS Andrea Doria was an ocean liner for the Italian Line (Società di navigazione Italia). Ansaldo Shipyards of Genoa built this ship and launched her on Jun 16, 1951. Her first maiden voyage on 14 January 1953. Her accident was in 25 July 1956, while Andrea Doria was approaching the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, bound for New York City, the eastbound MS Stockholm of the Swedish American Line collided with it and created one of history’s worse maritime disasters with 46 people killed.
Andrea Doria had a length of 697 ft, a beam of 90 ft, and a gross tonnage of 29,100. The propulsion system consisted of steam turbines attached to twin screws, enabling the ship to achieve a service speed of 23 knots, with a top speed of 26 knots. SS Andrea Doria was the largest, fastest and supposedly safest of all Italy’s ships at the time. She was an icon of Italian national pride with luxury design and carries about 1,200 passengers and 500 crews.
