Le Soleil Royal
The Le Soleil Royal (or “Royal Sun” as referred to by the French) was one of their fastest and elegant Tallships. It was decorated with extraordinary and marvelous flagships of the baroque era and had a sun chosen as the emblem to represent the vessel. It was captained under the French admiral Tourville. He had it commissioned numerous times with guns and filled with men. Le Soleil Royal was sailed into the Nine years war and later on would participate in numerous battles, such as the battle of beachy head, battle of barfleur, and battle at Cherbourg. During battle she would suffer numerous gunshot wounds and arson. Her last battle was the Battle of Cherbourg when she was finally lit ablaze, killing almost all crew members. The remains of the original ship are buried under a parking lot near the arsenal. Due to its iconic legacy, many ships after were named the Soleil Royal after her and continue her flagship. The Le Soleil is a part of large French artillery from several centuries ago, being one of the most notable.
