The Thunderbird is one of Lake Tahoe’s most enduring symbols of elegance and eccentricity, a yacht born from the imagination of a man who preferred solitude yet surrounded himself with spectacle. Commissioned in 1939–1940 by millionaire George Whittell Jr., the vessel was designed to echo the sleek lines of his personal Douglas aircraft. Naval architect John L. Hacker shaped that vision into a 55‑foot mahogany sports yacht, its double‑planked hull and brushed stainless‑steel cabin giving it a futuristic, almost airborne presence on the water.

Powered originally by twin 550‑hp Kermath V‑12 aircraft engines, the Thunderbird could surge across Tahoe at more than 30 knots, a streak of polished wood and chrome cutting through the high‑mountain silence. Whittell intended her as a private shuttle to his cliffside retreat, Thunderbird Lodge, but the yacht quickly became a floating salon for the powerful and the glamorous. Hollywood stars, political figures, and casino royalty stepped aboard her gleaming decks, turning quiet coves into impromptu stages of mid‑century celebrity.

Among her passengers were Frank Sinatra, who borrowed the yacht for lake cruises and once brought Marilyn Monroe aboard; Howard Hughes, who piloted her himself; and entertainers like Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., and Liza Minnelli. Even future presidents — John F. Kennedy and Gerald Ford — found themselves guests on Whittell’s extraordinary craft.

After Whittell’s death, the Thunderbird passed to casino magnate Bill Harrah, who restored her and replaced her engines with thunderous 1,100‑hp Allison V‑12 aircraft powerplants. Under Harrah, the yacht became synonymous with lavish parties and high‑stakes glamour, though not without mishaps — including a notorious incident in which children playing with the controls managed to capsize her.

By the 1980s, the Thunderbird had fallen silent, resting unused in her boathouse. But Tahoe locals refused to let the legend fade. A major restoration in 1991 returned her to her original Art Deco brilliance, preserving the craftsmanship and character that made her famous. Today she resides once more in her historic 100‑foot boathouse, connected to the lodge by a granite tunnel carved for Whittell’s private use.

Operated by Foundation 36, the Thunderbird sails again as a living museum — a testament to Tahoe’s golden age of luxury, aviation‑inspired design, and the colorful personalities who shaped its history. More than a yacht, she remains a cultural icon: the shimmering embodiment of an era when Lake Tahoe was a playground for dreamers, moguls, and legends.

--- The finest woods throughout the model, such as Ebony, Rosewood, Blackwood, Mahogany, and Teak
--- High‑quality fittings, trimmings, steering wheels, and propellers made of sculpted or cast metals

--- A specially developed multi‑layered paint system replicating the vessel’s true colors with remarkable depth

--- RC‑compatible construction with epoxy‑lined hulls, pre-installed propeller shafts, and rubber assemblies.  ----  Due to the many ways our customers                  may power their RC models, our models do not come with propellers.

---  Hatches open for easy RC equipment installation (motor and electronics not included).

Please note, as each model is hand-built by master craftsmen, slight variations in details and color may exist between pictures and models.
