The Swan That Lived Five Lives

The Suomen Joutsen began her story far from the cold waters of Finland. Launched in 1902 from the Chantiers de Penhoët shipyard in Saint‑Nazaire, France, she entered the world as the full‑rigged cargo ship Laënnec—a steel‑hulled giant built for the long, punishing trade routes that stitched together Europe, the Americas, and Australia. Her early years were defined by endurance: hauling grain, coal, and potassium nitrate across oceans, rounding Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope, and surviving tempests that tested even the strongest ships. Her maiden voyage nearly ended in catastrophe when she collided with the steamer Penzance in the Bay of Biscay, but she survived, repaired, and pressed on.

In 1922, she was sold to German owners and renamed Oldenburg, continuing her work as a freight carrier and later as a training vessel for merchant sailors. She remained a creature of the wind—one of the last great commercial sailing ships still crossing oceans as steam power overtook the maritime world.

Her transformation came in 1930, when Finland purchased the aging vessel and gave her a new identity: Suomen Joutsen, the Swan of Finland. Fitted with auxiliary engines and refitted for naval training, she became a proud ambassador of Finnish seamanship. Between 1931 and 1938, she made eight long international voyages, carrying naval cadets to distant ports and projecting Finland’s maritime presence far beyond the Baltic. Her white hull and towering rig made her instantly recognizable—a graceful symbol of a small nation’s connection to the sea.

War changed her role. During the Winter War and Continuation War, Suomen Joutsen served as a support vessel for submarines, motor torpedo boats, and later as a base ship for minesweepers. After the wars, she resumed training cruises in the Baltic and served as a floating residence and storage facility during naval exercises. From 1956 to 1959, she acted as an accommodation ship at Upinniemi, supporting Finland’s postwar naval rebuilding.

In 1961, she entered her fourth life as a stationary seamen’s school. For nearly three decades, she trained future members of the Finnish Merchant Navy, educating over 3,700 students and offering professional maritime courses. Her decks, once home to cadets crossing oceans, now echoed with the voices of young Finns preparing for careers at sea.

Her final transformation came in 1991, when the city of Turku donated her to the Forum Marinum Foundation. Permanently moored along the Aura River, she became a museum ship and cultural venue. Exhibitions and guided tours trace her “five lives”—freighter, German training ship, Finnish naval vessel, seamen’s school, and museum.

Today, Suomen Joutsen is the last remaining full‑rigged ship in Finland, a national treasure whose masts rise above Turku as a reminder of the age of sail and the endurance of steel. Her story spans oceans, wars, and generations—a ship that has lived many lives and remains one of the most beloved symbols of Finland’s maritime heritage.

--- The finest woods throughout the model, such as Ebony, Rosewood, Blackwood, Mahogany, and Teak

Please note, as each model is hand-built by master craftsmen, slight variations in details and color may exist between pictures and models.
