Launched in 1982, the SS Barakuda began her career as a purpose‑built research and survey vessel, designed for geophysical exploration and underwater inspection work across the Indonesian archipelago. At 38.99 meters in length and 8.5 meters in beam, with a gross tonnage of 392 and deadweight of 272 tonnes, she was engineered for endurance rather than speed, operating at a steady 10.5 knots during full‑power survey operations. Her compact size, maneuverability, and specialized equipment made her an ideal platform for scientific missions in Southeast Asia’s complex coastal and offshore environments.
In her early years, Barakuda supported a wide range of geophysical and hydrographic surveys, equipped with multibeam sonar, sub‑bottom profilers, magnetometers, and side‑scan sonar systems. These capabilities allowed her to map seafloors, identify geohazards, and support exploration projects during a period when Indonesia’s offshore energy sector was rapidly expanding. Over time, she evolved from a purely scientific vessel into a versatile commercial survey platform, bridging academic research with industrial demand.
Her identity changed as her role expanded. In 2003, she was renamed Pacific Pearl, reflecting her integration into broader commercial operations. Another renaming followed in 2010, when she became Mermaid Supporter, continuing her work in underwater inspection and offshore support. Throughout these transitions, Barakuda built a strong reputation for FPSO and platform inspection, using both ROV systems and surface diving teams to conduct underwater assessments across Southeast Asia. Her omni‑directional bow thruster and accommodation for 30 personnel made her well‑suited for extended offshore deployments.
A major milestone came in 2026, when she was transferred to PT Seascape Surveys Indonesia, a majority‑owned subsidiary tasked with strengthening commercial and operational efficiency. Under Seascape’s management, Barakuda continued to serve as a reliable survey and inspection vessel, supporting both scientific and commercial missions in the region’s busy offshore corridors.
As of May 2026, the SS Barakuda remained active in the Java Sea, with recent port calls including Tegal, Indonesia. More than four decades after her construction, she continues to operate as a capable and adaptable survey vessel — a testament to her robust design and the evolving needs of Indonesia’s maritime and offshore industries.
Today, the SS Barakuda stands as a long‑serving workhorse of Southeast Asian survey operations. Her history reflects the transformation of regional maritime research from small‑scale scientific expeditions to integrated commercial geophysical and inspection services. After more than forty years at sea, she remains a dependable platform for exploration, mapping, and underwater inspection — a vessel whose legacy is defined by endurance, versatility, and steady service across the waters of Indonesia.
